As millions of new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners scramble to find cases near Apple’s launch, good ones are few and far between. Enter the Speck Products CandyShell Grip for iPhone 6 case. Speck Products has been manufacturing high-quality cases for years, and I trust the company’s fit, finish, and engineering. Let’s put it this way: If you just shelled out hundreds of dollars for a brand new iPhone 6, continue to be smart and invest in a good case right now before you drop it.
The Speck CandyShell Grip for iPhone 6 is a great case.
It is certified to meet or exceed MIL-STD-810G drop test standards. It’s fairly thin but boasts a dual-layer design that has a shock-absorbing lining for most of the iPhone, including corners and buttons. Plus, it has a hard, impact-resistant exterior. Better still, it has a raised bezel to protect the front display edges of your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. I think a raised bezel is especially critical for iPhone 6 smartphones because the display glass blends into the rounded corners of the frame. You want to protect those edges, and all the current iPhone 6 cases made by Speck have raise bezel edges for protection.
Grippy Ridges Over Impact Protection
Because a naked iPhone 6 is a bit slick — and I know I’ll be distracted at some point in the next few months — I choose a chase that would provide tactile feedback and extra grip. The Speck CandyShell Grip case does the job admirably. I like the feel of the ridges, and it makes shooting video or snapping photos much easier than trying to hold a naked iPhone or a slick case.
The side buttons are covered by a durable rubbery material, and at first I considered cutting them out, but I’m glad I didn’t. After just one day of use, I found that I liked the button covers and the fact that the press action remains snappy and accurate.
Speck Products was one of the first high-quality case manufactures to get iPhone 6 and 6 Plus cases out the door and into the hands of consumers, and the company has a line of related cases that I can easily recommend, too. As you would expect, all of them come in a range of colors. Check them out:
CandyShell for iPhone 6 — A hard outer shell works with a soft, rubbery interior to absorb shock and only adds 0.16 inches to the thickness of your iPhone. Plus, it also meets the MIL-STD-810G drop test standards.
CandyShell Card for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — This case has the same basic structure as the other cases except it includes a slide-loading slot to hold up to three cards and cash for those looking to leave their wallets at home.
CandyShell Grip for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus — My favorite, of course, boasts the raised ridges for superior grip with a relatively slim profile. It’s truly a can’t-go-wrong case for those who want great protection in a relatively slim profile.
Get a Screen Protector Pronto!
There’s a lot of glass on an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, and while I like the feel of Apple’s glass, I’m no longer willing to leave it bare — I’ve seen too many friends break their phones by dropping them in parking lots while getting in and out of cars. I’m currently using the ZAGG InvisibleShield HDX for “HD Clarity + Extreme Shatter Protection.” Note: The curved glass edges on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus mean that screen protectors aren’t going to be able to cover the curved section in addition to the flat main screen — which is another reason you need a case to cover these edges. Screen protectors these days are installed more easily than those from years past, and they will fit over the middle, flat area of your screen — not the curved edges. Installed, the InvisibleShield HDX looks great. It feels fantastic and keeps your screen bright and clear. Comes with a warranty if you register it with ZAGG. Highly recommended.
