Apple iPhone 6s Sales Top 13 Million for New Opening Weekend Record

The first weekend sales of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus brought a new 3-day record — 13 million iPhones, Apple announced today.

Wow.

The volume is impressive, but what’s even more impressive is that Apple has managed to manufacture so many iPhones and get them into circulation, all within a very short time period. On October 9, Apple will bring the new iPhones to 40 additional countries, too.

“Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO.

“Customers’ feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can’t wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

In case you’re wondering about smartphone competition, the iPhone has consistently been selling better and better with every single release. Check out this graph that starts with the iPhone 4:

Of course, the overall numbers include phones like the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 6 Plus.

As for keeping this trend alive, Apple now has a pair of monthly payment programs that let you buy unlocked iPhones directly from Apple. The first option is a 24-month payment plan for about $30 a month depending on which iPhone you choose. The second is a monthly payment plan that starts at $33 a month that lets you trade in your iPhone every 12 months so you can get the latest iPhone each year. Either way, just be sure to choose the 64GB model over the paltry 16GB option, which is just not enough storage.

Both programs will remove the reliance on cellular service providers, enabling customers to get into new iPhones more easily.

I've been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and I still remember the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. I'm a big fan of elegant gear and great tech, but there's something to be said for turning it all off -- or most of it -- to go outside. Online I like to call out cool stuff on Wicked Cool Bite and blog with my buddies at Man Makes Fire. To catch me, take a "firstnamelastname" guess at the url of this site.
