Once an Underdog, Apple Now the Target for All Manner of Sticks and Stones

Apple is now King of the Hill, despite a rising horde of Android-based devices and despite a Mac that’s still a minority in a bigger world of PCs. The iPad is astoundingly the dominant tablet, and the MacBooks, iMac, and Mac mini are outselling any single other manufacturer’s offerings. The iPhone retains fantastic uptake in North America, and even where Apple isn’t the market leader, it’s definitely the mindshare leader.

Hence the haters, the sticks and stones, the wild Wall Street swings caused by investors betting on ups and downs rather than anything resembling true fiscal performance.

All of this makes me wonder: How is Apple going to navigate the world now? Will it forge ahead the same old way, by building fantastic products and ignoring everyone else? Will it pour on the charm? Or maybe break out a baseball batt to slap in one palm while staring down the naysayers?

I've been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and I still remember the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. I'm a big fan of elegant gear and great tech, but there's something to be said for turning it all off -- or most of it -- to go outside. Online I like to call out cool stuff on Wicked Cool Bite and blog with my buddies at Man Makes Fire. To catch me, take a "firstnamelastname" guess at the url of this site.
