I appreciate the svelte size and durability of the new aluminum Apple TV remote, but I’ve got to say, I’ve been using it for months now, and I still can’t get used to it.
I still have erroneous clicks when I use the raised-circle compass buttons, hitting the wrong portion of the buttons, going left, for example, when I wanted to go down. The little white previous generation remotes had a better tactile “button” feel, and while they look more like a toy than an elegant sculpture for a coffee table, at least I could quickly and easily navigate the Apple TV menu without paying much attention to the remote.
Isn’t that how a remote is supposed to work?
You should be able to use it when you’re sprawled out on the couch at an odd angle when your brain is taking a nap.
Alternatives?
Sure, I can use my iPhone or requisition an old iPod touch to give me a touchscreen remote, but that’s not the point — I want quick, easy access, and I don’t want to wait for an app to launch — or have to look at it to use it.
I’ve got to say, this is one of those rare times when an Apple product receives a functional upgrade, along with a style upgrade — but it came at the cost of overall ease of use.
Bummer.
