The Drowning App Pushes FPS Navigation into the Touch-based Future

The worst thing about first-person shooters on an iPad is the interface. For anyone who’s played and enjoyed FPS games on a console or Mac/PC, you’re just never as fast or accurate as you feel you should be. The Drowning changes that — a little. In an evolutionary move, you can now tap with two fingers to shoot on the screen. And swipe to move or see. It’s an improvement, and with a few tweaks, could get even better. The only thing dragging down The Drowning is the free-to-play revenue engine that seems to drive gameplay rather than naturally arise from a cool narrative and playing experience.

I've been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and I still remember the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. I'm a big fan of elegant gear and great tech, but there's something to be said for turning it all off -- or most of it -- to go outside. Online I like to call out cool stuff on Wicked Cool Bite and blog with my buddies at Man Makes Fire. To catch me, take a "firstnamelastname" guess at the url of this site.
