Loving and Hating iOS 7

Apple’s iOS refresh is both fantastic and maddeningly annoying. The layers are a nice touch while the colors make me feel like I’m holding some sort of garish piece of candy created by children at a birthday party. And the customization? Better than ever before — but there’s not much to customize, really, and if you’re not paying attention the bleed-through dominate color from your wallpaper photo might infuse your phone with a pesky shake of Pepto-Bismol pink.

But then implementations come to the rescue. Multitasking is fantastic. The new Safari is far more usable than I first thought. iTunes Radio is sweet. And the Photos app? Finally usable for managing hundreds, if not thousands, of photos on your iPhone.

I've been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and I still remember the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. I'm a big fan of elegant gear and great tech, but there's something to be said for turning it all off -- or most of it -- to go outside. Online I like to call out cool stuff on Wicked Cool Bite and blog with my buddies at Man Makes Fire. To catch me, take a "firstnamelastname" guess at the url of this site.
