No Cheap iPhones in the Works?

After building iPhones by fusing molecules together with pure magic, will Apple ever use polycarbonate again?

After I wrote “Apple Doesn’t Do Cheap” for MacNewsWorld, where I argue that the odds of Apple producing a low-cost, big-screen iPhone for China are slim-to-none anytime soon, I must admit that I was gratified to see Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, quoted from the Shanghai Evening News. What did he say? The exact wording may or may not be accurate since it seems to come from a translation of a translation, but he said something to the effect of, “Despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple’s products. In fact, although Apple’s market share of smartphones is just about 20 percent, we own the 75 percent of the profit.”

I've been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and I still remember the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. I'm a big fan of elegant gear and great tech, but there's something to be said for turning it all off -- or most of it -- to go outside. Online I like to call out cool stuff on Wicked Cool Bite and blog with my buddies at Man Makes Fire. To catch me, take a "firstnamelastname" guess at the url of this site.
